Since 1962, Universal Air Products Corporation (aka Universal Air Precipitator or UAPC) has produced two-stage, electrostatic precipitators in accordance with the Penney design formula. UAPC has produced in excess of 50,000 units, which are in operation across the USA and around the world. Markets served include commercial, industrial and residential applications.
All of our standard product designs are built upon the modular system concept. We build cells in 800, 1000 and 1200-CFM sizes. These cells are then installed adjacently until the cumulative volume of the application is satisfied. For example, if the application required 6000-CFM, then we have two standard configurations to offer. Either a two-tier or three-tier configuration is possible. A tier is single cell or a row of cells all slid tightly next to one another within the same enclosed, cabinet shelf. A given unit can be many shelves or tiers high, depending upon the total volume required. The two-tier configuration of the 6000-CFM unit would have three each, 1000 SCFM rated cells on each of two tiers. On the other hand, if a taller unit with less length better fits the available installation space, the same six cells can be configured in a housing designed for three tiers with two cells per tier.
Each tier has its own power supply. All power supplies for all models are UL867 registered and identical in design. The only variable is the primary voltage option of 115V or 230V. As such, cells can theoretically be configured for any permutation of available cell sizes. However, we never mix cell sizes in a single unit. Consequently, available products offer all potential permutations of a given cell size. Therefore, the 800-CFM cell could produce configurations totaling 800, 1600, 2400, 3200, 4000, 4800 and so on. In some cases, another size cell may be better suited to the application’s dimensions. For example, the 4000-CFM unit is better served by four each 1000-CFM cells, rather than five each 800-CFM cells.

Residential "D" Series Air CleanerD-series: Residential applications require an option for top-in, side-out airflow; or simple horizontal airflow. The D-series cabinet design accommodates this variable with two separate cabinet designs. Cabinets are made of cold rolled steel factory primed and finished in enamel. The D-series uses our full size, full efficiency cell dimensions. The same dimensions are used for the commercial and industrial cell designs; however, the materials of construction and the number of structural support members used within the cell are different. In overview, the D-series cell uses eight tie rod supports for its collector plates; its ionizing section is supported with ceramic insulators; and its end plates are made of galvanized steel. Otherwise, the D-series cell has collector plates, spacers and an ionizing section that are identical with the materials and dimensions of the commercial and industrial cell designs described below.
Residential "S" Series Air CleanerS-series: This product range is design for installation in tight furnace room spaces, common in apartment complexes or homes built on slabs and without basements. It uses a cell designed with less depth in the direction of airflow. Otherwise, the cell uses materials of construction identical with the D-series, and uses the same 800, 1000 and 1200-CFM sizes. Efficiency of collection at rated capacity is commensurate with the depth of the cell. Consequently, the S-series is used with the understanding that performance of the technology is not maximized. Although mostly a residential product, the S-series also is used in light commercial applications where space limitations exist.
Commercial "C" Series Air CleanerC-series: Commercial and industrial, in-duct designs use identical housing or cabinet structures made of galvanized steel to support the cells installed within them. The galvanized cabinet structure can be factory finished on its exterior in enamel at the customer's option. Seal welding of the cabinet is also available at its option. In-duct design means that the precipitator is supplied without an air handler and will be cut into a section of horizontal flow ductwork. Commercial cell designs are typically applied to applications where frequent and aggressive cleaning of the cells will not be required. The C-series is just as efficient as the industrial or I-series, however it is not as mechanically sturdy. Due to its lower cost, some customers opt for the C-series over the I-series. In overview, the C-series cell uses eight tie rod supports for the collector plates; its ionizing section is supported without ceramic insulators; and its end plates are made of galvanized steel. Otherwise, the C-series cell has collector plates, spacers and an ionizing section that are identical with the materials and dimensions of the residential and industrial cell designs.
HF-series: For applications requiring a quiet, variable speed air handler, UAPC builds the HF (Horizontal-flow, Fan) model. This model can be supplied with either a Commercial or Industrial series cell design and is only available in single cell configurations. The cabinet is made of cold rolled steel with factory finish. Its quiet fan has an infinitely variable speed control and is very quiet as compared with a squirrel cage blow.
Industrial "I" Series Air CleanerI-series: Like the Commercial (C-series), the industrial, in-duct designs use housing or cabinet structures to support the cells installed within them. The galvanized cabinet structure can be factory finished on it exterior in enamel at the customers option. Seal welding of the cabinet is also available at option and required for UL710 ductwork installations. Again, In-duct design means that the precipitator is supplied without an air handler and will be cut into a section of horizontal flow ductwork. Commercial cell designs are typically applied to applications where frequent and aggressive cleaning of the cells will not be required. The I-series has the same efficiency as the commercial or C-series, however it is sturdier. Due to its higher cost, some customers opt for the C-series over the I-series. In overview, the I-series cell uses twelve tie rod supports for the collector plates; its ionizing section is supported without ceramic insulators; and its end plates are made of heavy gage aluminum. Otherwise, the I-series cell has collector plates, spacers and an ionizing section that are identical with the materials and dimensions of the residential and industrial cell designs.
Self-Contained "Mi" Series Air CleanersMi-series: This product range is self-contained, utilizing its own built in squirrel cage blower and motor assembly. Typically the units are free standing or suspended from the ceiling. Source capture applications use a pickup hose assembly to draw mist or smoke directly from it source and into the precipitator for cleaning much like a vacuum cleaner. Mi-series units are built only with industrial cells as described above under the I-series. Blower and motor assemblies are designed to accommodate the SCFM throughput of the application with consideration for internal and external static pressure losses. Mi-series housings are made of cold rolled steel that is primed and finished in enamel. Single tier and two tier configurations are available in sizes ranging from 800-CFM to 6000-CFM.
